Turkey Hunt Public Land (THPL) was created in 2009 by avid turkey hunter and competitive caller, Shane Simpson. Shane travels the country, videoing the hunts of others as they pursue America’s favorite game bird, the wild turkey. Participants are chosen from a list of interested hunters according to when they are available to hunt, their location and if it corresponds to Shane’s desired travel route. Participants are not charged any fees for this service and as the title implies, most hunts occur on, but are not restricted to, public accessible lands. A typical season of THPL consists of two parts nicknamed the “Turkey Tour” and the “Weekend Tours” and usually begins in late March or early April and runs until the end of May. The “Turkey Tour” is the main travel portion of each THPL season and last about 3 weeks or so. During this period, Shane travels to the more distant hunting locations from his home in St. Paul, MN. The “Weekend Tours” are just that, weekend trips to hunter locations that are less than a 10 hour drive away from his home. These include such places as South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska and occur on weekends prior to and after the “Turkey Tour” period. Videos of successful hunts, as well as a short biography of the hunter(s) involved, are usually posted to the THPL website within a day or two of their completion which allows visitors to follow along as the season progresses.
